Central Eastern Europe emerges as a major growth market for the European coffee industry

For Immediate Release

New research from CoffeeSights highlights faster consumption growth, expanding out-of-home demand and strong momentum in professional espresso machines.

October 22, 2026 — Coffee consumption across the 21 Central Eastern European markets covered by the study reached 573.1k tonnes in 2025, generating a total market value of €6.72 billion (sell-in). Between 2021 and 2025, consumption increased at a compound annual growth rate of 2.4% in volume and 8.1% in value.

Central Eastern Europe is growing faster than the West

The region expanded considerably faster than Western Europe, where coffee volume recorded a CAGR of only 0.1% over the same period. Western European market value increased by 5.6% annually, compared with 8.1% in Eastern Europe. Eastern Europe now represents 23.0% of total European coffee volume and 15.7% of value.

Non-EU markets record the strongest growth

Within Central Eastern Europe, the 12 EU Eastern markets consumed 343.9k tonnes of coffee worth €4.48 billion (sell-in) in 2025. Between 2021 and 2025, their volume increased at a CAGR of 1.5%, while value grew at a CAGR of 7.4%. Over the same period, the nine non-EU Eastern markets reached 229.2k tonnes and €2.24 billion (sell-in), growing more rapidly at CAGRs of 3.9% in volume and 9.5% in value.

Whole bean and portioned coffee gain momentum

Ground coffee remains the dominant format, accounting for 56.3% of Central Eastern European volume. Growth, however, is concentrated in whole bean and portioned coffee. Their volumes increased at CAGRs of 9.4% and 9.2% respectively between 2021 and 2025. Instant coffee declined by 3.1% annually. Portioned coffee still represents only 5.3% of Central Eastern volume, compared with 18.3% in Western Europe, indicating significant room for development.

Out-of-home coffee creates disproportionate value

The out-of-home market accounted for 110.8k tonnes in 2025, equivalent to 19.3% of Central Eastern European volume. It generated €2.02 billion (sell-in), or 30.0% of total market value. The average out-of-home sell-in price reached €18.20 per kilogram, compared with €10.17 for coffee consumed at home, producing a price premium of 1.79 times.

Central Eastern Europe nevertheless remains below Western European out-of-home penetration. In the West, the channel accounts for 24.3% of volume and 35.3% of value. From 2024 to 2025, Central Eastern European out-of-home volume increased by 6.6% and value by 14.1%.

HORECA leads market growth

HORECA represented 59.6% of Eastern European out-of-home volume and 65.7% of value in 2025, reaching 66.0k tonnes and €1.33 billion (sell-in). Between 2021 and 2025, HORECA volume grew at a CAGR of 11.5%, compared with 4.0% for non-HORECA. HORECA value increased by 14.9% annually, twice the 7.4% recorded by non-HORECA, and generated 76.6% of the increase in out-of-home value.

Poland and Turkey shape regional demand

Poland remains the largest coffee market in Central Eastern Europe, representing 24.0% of regional volume and 26.1% of value. Turkey ranks second overall and records the fastest consumption growth, with an 11.5% volume CAGR between 2021 and 2025. It is also the largest HORECA market, accounting for 31.5% of Central Eastern European HORECA volume. Romania and Czechia complete the group of the largest consumer markets.

Professional espresso machine demand accelerates

Central Eastern European demand for professional espresso machines reached 55.6k units and €228 million (sell-in) in 2025. Unit sales grew at a CAGR of 5.5% between 2021 and 2025, while value increased by 13.0%. The region now represents 16.2% of the European market by units and 14.7% by value.

Fully automatic machines are driving this expansion. Unit demand increased at a CAGR of 10.4% and value by 17.9%. Fully automatic models accounted for 64.6% of Central Eastern European machine sales and 66.3% of value in 2025. Traditional machine volumes declined by 1.4% annually, although their value increased by 5.6% as average prices rose.

Further development potential

The findings position Central Eastern Europe as an important source of incremental demand for the European coffee industry. Lower out-of-home penetration, limited consumption of portioned coffee and a persistent price gap with Western Europe leave room for further development, while the current growth of HORECA, whole bean coffee and fully automatic machines is already reshaping the market.
